What does it take to find your passion?

Maybe you had it and you lost it. Maybe you never had it. How do you know when you are doing it?

What is your passionThese are questions that have been driving me the last four years.  What is my passion? How do I find it?  Where do I start?

In this post, I want to get you started.

First step, do some self discovery.  I used a couple of tools to find my strengths and gifts again.  Specifically, a Myers Briggs survey, Strengthfinders 2.0, and reviewing my past history.  The first two are pretty straight forward, but the last one takes some time to create a story.  What I found most helpful is looking at the times in my life when I could not wait to start. Felt excited or energized about what was happening.  I wrote these events down in my journal.  I tried to reflect on how I was feeling, what I liked about what was happening.  This took time. Once I had a few stories written down, I started to look for patterns and similarities.  Then I wrote those down.  This was the beginning of finding my passion.

If you are looking for yours, start with the above steps to begin the journey.

A Fresh Start

Every year I look forward to a fresh start in January.  Then by the end of the first quarter nothing seems different.  Until now. Over the last two years I have decided that I should find my passion and follow it.  It was hard to identify at first.  I knew what made me happy, family, dancing (especially salsa), music ( all types ) and traveling. But passion felt bigger than this.

Picture2My coach told me that passion comes from inside us; from our world view. It creates in us a want to make a difference.  I considered this along with understanding what my strengths and natural talents were. (we all have them)

My passion is so focused and it drives me everyday. I get up with an excitement to see what the day holds.  I am learning things and challenging myself in ways I was so afraid of.  But in the process I know that even if I fail that I will learn more about myself and it will only fuel my passion.

This year will be fresh, because I am.

What is standing in your way?

What excuse do you tell yourself?  I don’t have a degree. I am not smart enough. I don’t deserve it. I don’t have enough time. I don’t have enough money. My kids need me. What IS standing in your way?

Kimberly Brust Standing in Your WayI am sure the list could go on forever.  There could be as many road blocks as there are people.  We can always find a reason to  stop us from doing what we would love to be doing.  However,  what is really stopping us is fear.

This is the fear that could keep us from living our passion, creating our dream and doing what makes us truly happy.

What excuse are you making? NOW, what can you do about it?  Don’t be looking for the quick fix but rather a small step you can take today, tomorrow and the day after that will lead you down the road to your passion. As you progress, you will find the next small step and the next.

It is the smallest step that can lead to the biggest rewards. Don’t give up.  Just keep pushing through.

“You are far too smart to be the only thing standing in your way.”

What is your passion?

When a friend asked me, “what do you want?” I was flabbergasted…. “What do you mean?  I have a lovely home, great kids, work I love, great friends and a loving, healthy family. isn’t that what everyone wants? I have it!”  He said, “That’s great, but what do YOU want?” Clarify that, I said… “What is your passion? Where do you derive the greatest satisfaction and joy?” Normally, I have an answer on the tip of my tongue for any question, but today, I was lost.  The painful silence felt uncomfortable.  He said, “Now I know I have struck a chord.”

My friend said, “Think about it and get back to me.”

Kimberly Brust PassionWhen was the last time I felt truly joyful? What was I doing? Where was I?

It took weeks to remember.  I had to go back so many years. As I went back through the Rolodex of memories in my head, I remember events in my 20’s. That brought me back to even younger years.  I started to see a pattern.  The joyful events shared many similarities. When I was doing these things, I was using talents and gifts that were natural. It just felt like the authentic, real me.

When was the last time you felt the authentic you?  What were you doing?

What happens in the hive? Passion!

A buzzing of energy at work creating the sweetness of life. What happens in the hive?Working together with common purpose and direction under the strong leadership of a “BEE”nevolent queen, with the end result in something golden, warm, valuable and life sustaining….passion!

Picture1That is how I feel each and everyday about the life I have created.  I work with a great team, each looking to learn something new and create a better life for themselves.  Then I get to come home to my family and am so impressed that each one of them is learning, creating and developing a life they can be proud of.

As a leader, I feel so excited to surround myself with these people.  Their passion only inspires my passion further.
